Jeff Nichols, the writer-director of Loving, a low-key drama depicts the Lovings as a modest, laconic pair who don’t see anything remarkable about their relationship and who want nothing more than the chance to live peacefully together.
Perhaps Loving is too reserved and dignified for its own good, though. If Nichols had allowed the conflict and emotion to flare up occasionally, the resulting heat might have attracted a wider audience, or even a Best Picture nomination.
But there’s no doubt that Loving glows with the kind of decency and humanity that we badly need to be reminded of at the moment. Besides, whatever the Oscar voters decide, Negga’s balance of soft-spoken sweetness and iron-willed determination makes her performance an absolute winner.
